In response to the devastation suffered by Mohawk Valley residents as a result of recent severe flooding, WKTV, NewsChannel 2, along with the Roser Communications Radio Network and United Way of the Valley and Greater Utica Area will host the
Flood of 2013: Disaster Recovery Telethon
on Wednesday July 3, 2013.

All proceeds from the telethon will go to benefit those residents living in Herkimer and Oneida Counties who were displaced and whose homes and businesses were heavily damaged and, in many cases, destroyed.

“Our people on the ground in the flood zone saw first-hand the despair of our viewers, many of whom have lost everything. In fact, many of our Smith Media colleagues in the Utica market were hit hard by the floods themselves,” said Steve Doerr, Vice President and Regional Group Manager for Smith Media’s East Coast operations. “It’s been a busy news cycle so the scope of the flooding in Central New York – from Syracuse to the Capital Region - has flown below the national radar screen. With our radio partners at Roser Communications and the support of our largest regional advertisers, we’re going to make sure this crisis gets the attention required.”

The cross-platform fund-raising effort begins at 12am July 3rd on WKTV.com, the Roser Communications Radio Networks. 12pm on WKTV NewsChannel 2 with a live simulcast across all platforms between 7-8pm.

“These folks aren’t just our viewers; they are our friends and neighbors. As the leading voice in our region and community, we need to step up and help, many of whom will need help for the foreseeable future,” said Steve McMurray, WKTV’s Station Manager. “Many viewers who were fortunate enough to not be impacted by the flooding are asking how they can help. Donating to the telethon is the most effective way to lend a hand.”

The United Way is in an unique position to collect and distribute funds to all the service agencies making flood relief and recovery efforts throughout our service area while also coordinating communications among local providers.

Local service providers are doing an amazing job. Agencies are serving hundreds of meals per day feeding people throughout the affected areas. Emergency needs are being assessed and coordinated to assist in damage reporting to our Federal Government Agencies. Other service groups are sending cleanup kits and cleaning crews. This is all just to name a few of the many agencies coordinating support in our area. This is about so much more than any one single agency. It is about a community coming together through a crisis and helping each other as recovery efforts begin. It is about a community coming together through a crisis and helping each other as recovery efforts begin.

United Way of the Valley and Greater Utica Area is retaining no admin fee from this effort.
